Crisis Center Recognizes October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month

Posted Tuesday October 5, 2021

Each year, advocates, survivors and supporters recognize October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM). This year’s campaign theme, #Every1KnowsSome1, highlights how common domestic violence is and that it is more than physical violence.

Domestic violence is more prevalent than most realize and it affects everyone.  Anyone, regardless of gender, race, sexual identity or orientation, or socio-economic status can be a victim of domestic violence.  It affects our family members, friends, neighbors, coworkers, and our communities.  All of us must be part of the solution.

Throughout October, the Crisis Center will be sharing content on their Facebook to help raise awareness and educate the community about domestic violence. Silent Witness Silhouettes that honor victims who have lost their lives to domestic violence will also be on display in various locations throughout the Crisis Center’s service area.  A national week of action is planned for October 18 – 24, which is designed to engage advocates, partners, and the public in starting conversations about domestic violence and taking action.  October 21 is Purple Thursday, the color for domestic violence awareness, so be sure to wear your purple and show your support!

Free and confidential help is available 24/7 for people experiencing domestic violence or abuse.  If you or someone you know needs help, call the Crisis Center’s 24/7 hotline at 1-800-727-2785 or the Kansas Crisis Hotline at 1-888-363-2287.
